This World Suicide Prevention Day, we’re sharing one important message: If you think someone might be suicidal, take action, interrupt their thoughts and show them you care.
Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK or Ireland dies by suicide and 1 in 4 of us has had suicidal thoughts.

Why is World Suicide Prevention Day important?
World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on 10th September each year. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about suicide, encouraging open conversations, and promoting actions that can help prevent suicide on a global scale. The focus is on providing support to those in need, spreading awareness about mental health, and reducing the stigma associated with seeking help. It’s a day for communities worldwide to come together to share resources, advocate for change, and support individuals who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts or mental health challenge
The shocking statistics regarding the suicide in our key sectors tell us why World Suicide Prevention Day is so important:
- Three in five suicides are by men, with suicide the biggest cause of death for men under 50. [Office of National Statistics (ONS) ]
- In 2023, there were 6,069 suicides registered in the England and Wales. [ONS]
- Research has identified an increase in ‘deaths of despair’ – deaths attributed to alcohol, drugs, and suicide. These deaths have risen by 24% since the pandemic, equating to approximately 3,700 additional deaths in 2023 compared to pre-pandemic levels.
